Family Promise of Spokane

From the

Executive Director

Click for more information

Last month, I experienced the worst news.  A family of five with three kids under the age of five had to sleep in a car because our shelter was already over-capacity. Can I invite you to put yourself in the shoes, or car, of that family for a moment?  Where do you got to the bathroom? How do you sleep?  Eat? Console? Stay warm?  That would be really, really hard. That is the bad news. The good news is that HOPE is on the way. We have our sights on a new building that will provide increased capacity, transitional apartments, a walk-in refrigerator, a commercial kitchen, and offices that we could use for other non-profit partners to provide services for our family. The new building is situated on two bus lines, two blocks from a school that has the second highest number of homeless students and is almost dead center between the two zip codes with the highest number of homeless families. And, Bing Crosby used to have coffee in this building whenever he was in town!!!! :)

How you can help...

We are looking for people to provide in-kind services and we need LOTS of volunteers! We need your help in this process, not only with your own donations, but also through getting the word out to other possible contributors. We really can't do it without you.

Because of some early donations and an incredible fundraiser by Ryan and Kara Rowe in their "Fishing for Families" fundraiser, we are just about 1/3 of the way to $100,000 that we need!

Please consider how you can play a part in helping homeless families find a way home. And, take a few minutes to watch the video above about how four of our families found their way home and are now helping other families find their way home!

Sincerely,

Steve Allen

Executive Director

NEIGHBORS

Our Rental Assistance

 & Prevention Program

We prevented four families from eviction and homelessness and helped three families move out of homelessness into homes!

WE LOVE OUR NEIGHBORS PROGRAM!!!

There is nothing else out there like this program that provides immediate help to desperate families!!! Thank you to VIKING HOMES for your continual donations!

OPEN DOORS

Our Emergency Family Shelter

Greetings from Open Doors!

Signs of the coming winter are all around us now! While we prepare to turn our clocks back and snuggle up in our homes for a cold winter, The homeless families of Spokane are needing our shelter more than ever

October was a very busy and very rewarding month!  We were able to serve 149 unduplicated individuals in our Family Shelter! 81 children and 68 parents were able to come in out of the wet cold and take showers, eat, wash their clothes and have a warm place to sleep. We provided case-management to every family in our shelter which helped us move 18 people into permanent housing, 7 into transitional housing and 5 families increase their income!

We had 6 families attend the Responsible Renter's class which is a great tool for families with a lot of barriers for getting into housing.

BRIDGES

Our Church Partnership Transitional Shelter

Our Bridges program saw two families move into homes this month and we brought in two more families! So exciting!

We welcomed SOMA Church back as a host church with a really cool partnership utilizing the New Community building and volunteers!

Lastly, thank you again to all the volunteer van drivers who drive, this program, literally and figuratively!

VILLAGE

Our Aftercare Program

The Village is growing!!

We continue to have families move into homes and join the aftercare program. This is amazing because it means more families to share opportunities with,  more families supporting each other and more families becoming sustainable.

More exciting news! Our section 8 voucher partnership has allowed for us to TRIPLE our current vouchers to be able to assist more families in need.

With many finding housing, the need for home goods increases. We have been able to provide families with basic items like small appliances, dishes, towels and furniture because of kind donations from the community. We are always accepting donations and now have a link on our website for donors.

Volunteer Updates

We have a volunteer family counselor that comes in and meets with our guests once a week and another volunteer who comes in and does financial counseling.

Thanks to volunteers and staff, we were also able to put on an amazing Halloween carnival for the kids this year!
